how much more difficult is it to install a head gasket on a diesel versus a gas engine? would it be easier to just switch in another diesel? i'm hoping i have a simple problem, but i'm preparing for the worst. thanks
Need more info on what's wrong? It is just as easy to change heads on a diesel. The only thing that is hard is the machining. The pre-combustion chambers are very difficult to get even with the head surface. Most heads have to be machined because they are no longer flat. So make sure you take than to a good reputable machine shop. Why are you interested in pulling the heads?
I just replaced both heads and gaskets on my bro-in-laws 1986 6.9. It really was no harder than a gasser. Just a note, you'll have to leave some of the rear head bolts in the right head to get it out and back in as the heater box keeps them from being taken all the way out.
i just don't know whats happening, i replaced all the injectors, didn't test drive, but the next day i had 2 tows. it started ok but emitted great clouds of billowing smoke. i drove about 2 miles, when i noticed the temp gauge was hot. i immediately pulled into a gas station. it took 3 gallons of water. went to point A and hooked up about 5 miles. put another gal of water in and drove to my house (8mi.), and put the hose to it. drove to point B (# mi.) and dropped car, then went back home. all the while truck sounded like it was getting better and the smoking had diminishes greatly. i parked the truck and haven't started it since last sat. i don't want to break anything, what do i test for? does this whole nightmare sound like an sat question? thanks
