I have 221,000 miles on the 7.3, smokes a little on start-up and idles rough for about 20-30 seconds when it is cold started, otherwise it runs really well. I was told the start up issue could be from the pump getting worn on the advance start-up, but the injectors have never been replaced. If I do replace them, will I notice a difference? Any info is appreciated.
That's a common practice. When i's real cold, my 6.9 sounds like it starts on 4 cylinders, then as it warms up, starts hitting on 6, then finally hits high idle on all 8, then goes to low idle after 10 minutes. And that's when it's 40. Don't ask about 0...
Anyhow, you may or may not notice a difference. Your best best is to keep an ear open for any ticking that works in correlation with RPM. I thought I had an injector sticking a while ago, but after a dose of power service, it went away. If it's that great of a concern to you, take them out and buy 8 NEW ones (not rebuilt) and take them to a diesel shop and have them all pop tested. Sometimes the ones with 200k miles on them pop at higher pressures than the new ones.
