Hey i was wonderin what yall would reccomend for low cost mods on a I6. Its in a 93 f-150 4x4. Its got an 8 inch lift on 40's with smoke stacks . I'll be usin the truck for daily drivin and some off road. It would be most appreciative for any input. THANKS
what motor should i swap? whats easiest? i can get a 302 real cheap an easy but i dont know much about whats needed in a swap out for different size motors. SOMEONE HELP ME! im lost lol
The 300 is a good motor, 40's are pretty steep though. It can run with those, but it wont have the power that you want. If you want to swap it out, dont swap for a 302, swap for at least a 351. JMO
Yeah this one go to the moter swap form. If you want to pick up what the 40" cost you you need to re-gear the front and rear ends. There is no way around that a motor change will give you more power but it will still strain with the stock gears. My advice would be to grin and bear the gear swap.
The 351 and 460 are not that far apart in regards to their fuel consumption: basically they both suck the gas.
You also have to remember that unsprung weight, as well as rotating unsprung mass adds alot to a vehicle. Those 40's plus their rims weight ALOT more then the tires that truck was made for. Even if he had the gearing right, his mileage with those size tires is gonna be - to be blunt - ****. Go in and swap up to a 4.56 gearset (Or higher, look below) front and rear. If those are stock axles, you may want to swap out. 40's would be brutal on stock axles.
My personal thoughts? Do as mentioned above with a 460 swap. Make that a complete Hoss for offroading. Then, if you're not a 'big boy', go out and get yourself something like an Escort GT. They have lots of get up and go, and also get about 35 miles to the gallon driven frugally.Anybody at work ever gives you crap then drive your beast the next day. You can pick one up for 500-1500 and insurance would be cake.
The 300 I don't think can handle that situation. With 4-wheeling you need not only gobs of torque, but some horsepower to get things going too. The 300 just doens't have that without tearing into it. With that big of a rig I'd run either a 390FE or a 460. The key to the whole thing is gear swapping. Those tires are big enough that even 4.10's won't cover that up. 4.56's might still be too 'high' for it..you might be looking at 5.13's or up. Take the truck to a differential specialist shop and see what they have to say about things. You not only need to get enough gearing to return it to 'normal,' but also some additional gearing because of those heavy tires and just so you can tear up the trails.
saurian is right, hybrids look good on paper but usually don't work that well. Think of a bike, if you want an awesome dirtbike it wont be that fast or handle very well on the street and if you buy a gsx-r you can;t take it off road. An enduro will do both but not sa well. It's funny saurian said to buy an escort gt. I'm in the process of building my truck and I bought a 92 gt for 700 bucks for a daily driver. It's a fun little car to drive, the motor's real strong and the mpg is awesome.
Exactly the reason I recommended the car. Not expensive at all, no parts that break alot on them (Unless you run the hell out of it), fun to run the hell out of (hehe), and of course - it sips the gas, not chugging it down.
After my trip and after I get a job down here (recently moved) I'm planning on getting my hands on an Escort GT for 'transportation.' Then I want to get rid of my truck I have now and move up to something better. I'm thinking...73-79 Ford O_O.
