So I'm just a beginner at getting stuff for my 2003 F-150 Super Cab. I've replaced the tail lights, head lights, had a new muffler welded in, and just this weekend had limo tint put on every window (hope the cops don't find me ).
Anyway, I was thinking about the sound system next. I have the Lariat package, so I have Ford's "premium" speakers which actually have been doing a good job so far and I'm fairly pleased. I have about $800 to work with right now. Is this enough to get a nice complete system, or would you just recommend getting a sub box with 2 10's and an amp? Which would be better?
I have the factory 6 CD changer, so I don't want to replace the deck. I really know nothing, or even what the amp is for. Any advice would greatly be appreciated.
Do you have buckets with the center console? If you do, I'd highly recommend a JL Audio stealthbox for your truck. It's pretty pricey (~$500) depending on what kinda connections you have, but you can't get a better sub box. I've got a stealthbox in my '97 F150.
After the stealthbox, I'd put the other $300 or so into an amp. If you could do some looking around to find a good price, the JL 250/1 would make an ungodly companion to the stealthbox.
However, if you're tight on cash, you could pick up a cheap amp...be warned though, cheap amps can blow subs fast if you aren't careful. I'm using a Rockford Fosgate 350S (about 175W going to the sub) and I've been told that my setup sounds damn nice for an extended cab truck with one 10" sub.
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have 2 buckets with the center console. Does the sub that you're talking about fit inside of it? I don't really use it for storage right now anyway. I saw another sub box that would fit 2 10s under the rear seat that I was thinking about.
Is the cubic ft ratio important when looking at sub boxes?
Yes, the stealthbox fits under the plastic console shell (here's a pic of the box ...)
If you've found a box you like, definitely go for it. I just have personal experience with the JL Stealthbox, and it's been awfully good to me.
And yes, definitely, the cubic ft of the box is important. You'll want to check the vendor website and get the specs for the recommended box volume (or recommended sealed volume, etc...just find similar wording), and make a box with the recommended volume--that'll provide the best sub enclosure for your specific sub.
i would recommend getting a new deck even though you dont want to. a good deck can make or break a system. You dont need a 300$ deck, but u should get one that gives you more control over the sound quality, and with rca hookups to make connecting everything easier.
I agree stoolieb on a new deck...way easier and cleaner install for an amp. I also agree with the 2 10's under the seat. I would just keep the factory premium speakers and just add the subs. thats just my opinon though...
