Question Engine ID

I recently purchased a 1955 F350 dump truck that had an engine upgrade sometime back in the early 70's. The previous owner told me that he remembered the 6 cylinder replacement engine might have been from a ~1963 F250. How can I determine the exact year and displacement of this engine. Thanks for the help.

Which side of the engine is the intake/exhaust on?
-If they're on the driver's side then you've got a 215/223/262. If I remember right, the casting #s are just above the oil pan, rear of the block, driver's side, I could be wrong though (regardless, I belive the #s are just above the oil pan). A 215 ('52-3) has the distributor in the center of the block. The 223 ('54-'64) & 262 ('61-4) have the distributor towards the front of the block. 223s have one large rib above the oil pan line on the driver's side that runs the entire lenth of the block. 262s have an additional rib & a longer stroke (about 4"?).
-If they're on the passenger side then you've got a 240/300. The only real way to tell the difference between the 240 ('65-'72, -'74 trucks) & 300 ('65-'96) is the stroke.
Hope this helps.
