Today my alter. light popped on.
Does this necessarily mean I need to switch out my altenator?
Can I still drive it?
I cant figure out how to search old forums under this specific question...
Usually it means that it has either quit charging or is overcharging. Either is bad. I would run it by a local parts place. They can check the alternator on or off the truck. It could leave you stranded if the battery dies. If it is overcharging, you risk blowing up the battery and or most of the bulbs in the truck.
it is a 79 f100
They said at the shop that looked as if the charge was alright but that perhaps the wiring was bad or that I might need a new altenator.
Just looking for some kind of second opinion since if I do need an altenator I will be doing the work myself and I have never done a thing like this before.
Want to make sure I am not getting talked into buying something I might not need.
