Charcoal cannister?
My charcoal cannister is all messed up and the weld broke that hold the lines to the fuel tank. It's on a 1975 360.My truck just became old enough not to smog, so that's not a problem. What does the cannister do, and is it necessary to keep?

The cannister will reduce the fuel smell around your vehicle. They are fairly simple systems. The fuel tank vents thru the charcoal cannister and the charcoal picks up the hydrocarbons. These are later pulled into the engine to be burned. I guess it helps VERY slightly with fuel economy but it does help the environment. In other words you can run without it but it is better to have.

So there should be a vent line that runs from the gas tank all the way up to the cannister? What years and engine combos came with this setup. I have the bracket in my 78 f150 4x4, but it came with a 351 and picked up a 460 at some point. The vent tube from my gas tank extends about 6" and just hangs there in the air....which doesn't look exactly right to me.
