I have a 2000 B3000 and i want a car back for it. i cant decide between the gibson or the dynomax. the gibson is about $70 more if i went with a aluminized version or $200 more for the stainless. I dont think i need to a stainless exhaust.
which one sounds better on a 3.0L and which one performs better? I'm looking to get eaither one in the next few weeks.
PS I tried searching and i didnt get any good answers.
I went with a Gibson stainless steel, nice tone, quiet on the highway, easy to install and high quality. If you plan on keeping the truck for a while I would go with the stainless since they probably use salt on the roads in CT.
The gibson gives a nice mellow tone...even on a 4 banger. The Gibson and Dynomax will give you pretty much the same performance increase. If it were me I'd go with a SS Basani cat back...it sounds like a really loud 350z and it creates enough backpressure so you don't lose any bottom end torque.
If you don't want it to be super loud, but have a deeper lower tone, Gibson is what you want. You don't want any backpressure from a muffler (this is a whole different thread/arguement so I'l leave it at that) I noticed performance increases at all RPM's out of my Gibson on my 4.0. I am extremely happy with it. The SS is warrented for lifetime on rust, so if you plan to keep it for any length of time, that is the way to go. I was asking the same question a year ago, and went SS, was told that the alumnized may see rust in as little as 3 years if there is a lot of snow/salt on the roads. I feel the SS was worth the extra $90 it cost me.
I put a Dynomax catback system on my 99 3.0L SC about a year ago. I went w/ it since it was only $125 after the rebate from Summit Racing (free shipping, too).
If you plan on keeping the truck for a very long period of time, go for the stainless w/ Gibson or whomever. I just couldn't see the added expense down south. I've had good luck w/ aluminized systems in the past and only painted the seam periodically w/ high heat exhaust paint to help delay any rust.
This kit was a breeze to install, and the performance is certainly better. As far as the sound, I've had comments from others that it doesn't sound like a little 6 cyl. It does have a throaty growl similar to a 8 cyl., definitely not a coffee can on a Honda.
However, at lower speeds the interior level is slightly higher but not an issue. You may only notice it when you're not alone w/ the stereo at normal listening volume (i.e. chatting w/ the mrs., etc.). It kinda makes you forget you are driving an economy minded vehicle.
One thing for certain. All economy gains go out the window if you have your foot in it and enjoying the sound...
I went with the Magnaflow Cat Back Stainless exhaust system for my truck. Sounds great and noticed an improvement in power along with the air box Mod. Check this place out for a super price on Magnaflows.
I notice no one is saying anything about a custom cat-back with a Flowmaster 40 series. I got mine really cheap because I just hacked the Flowmaster off my 'yota when I sold it and had it put on my Ranger. $60 was the total price. Would have been about $150 had I bought the muffler from him. Coupled with my intake mod, my truck growls quite nicely. Definitely enough to make people turn their heads if I'm really gettin' on it (almost all the time ). It sounds like our K1500 350 at startup and idle on a cool morning.
