Hi all, i just found out my 2,3 in my ranger is junk, should i stay with a 2.3 or go bigger like a 2.5 4.0 ?? all i will be pulling is a trailer with my 4 wheeler on it any input would be great, thanks marvoles, 93 ranger,2.3 with a 5 speed,
I agree, my 4.0 is getting about 16 mpg....kinda sucks...I bought this truck to save me on fuel but my 97 F350 4x4 5 spd diesel was getting 18-19 and the fuel is 30 cents a gallon cheaper. Plus the fact that a big diesel is just way cooler than a Ranger. Don't get me wrong I like my new ranger but its quite a step down from my F350.
There isn't much of a difference between the 2.3L and the 2.5L. They do make a lot more along the lines of performance upgrades for the 2.3L. As soon as my Ranger is paid off, I'm trading it in for a nice 4.0L. I live in California, home of the high gas prices, and I'll gladly pay the extra $2-3 per fillup and at least have instant power.
You can get decent mileage out of a 4.0 if you're easy on the throttle. I get 16 in town and have gotten 23 on the highway, before modding it I was getting about 15 and 21, and that's with a 4wd. I would suspect a 2wd to get 1-2 better. If you're going to be pulling the trailer fairly often or for long distances, you will really appreciate the 4.0, but if it's only on occasion and for short distances, the 4 banger will be just fine. I've had both and am much happier with the 4.0. To me the exta power is more than worth the extra cost of gas, but to others it may be the opposite. If you're looking for power though, the 4.0 won't dissapoint.
