leaky wheel seal

I noticed that a rear wheel seal was leaking on my '85 f-250. Is this something I can fix correctly in my driveway with basic hand tools? What about the brakes? I was told that once they are contaminated with gear oil they will have to be replaced also. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

are you sure it is the rear wheel seal leaking? If you Have a leaky wheel cylinder it will look like gear lube when it mixes with the brake dust. easy way to tell is to pull the hub off and check for fluid around the seal on the wheel cylinder or take the cap off your master cylinder and make sure both are about 1/4th of an inch below the top of the m.c.

If you have a full floating rear it should be easy. If you have a LD F250 you have a semi floating rear, in that case you have to remove the diff cover to access the clips that hold the axle in. a little more involved then the FF rear. If gear oil has contminated the brake shoes you must replace them.

Tore in to the f-250 today. I was able to get down to the seal pretty easily, but, I didn't like the looks of the spindle. It has a scabby layer of rust on the top half from the inside of the outer bearing race, to the raised inner portion the seal runs on. Can I sand the corrosion off to ensure a good seal on the new parts? If not, what are my options? Once again any advice to this rookie is much appreciated.

I would try using some crocus cloth to sand the rust off the spindle.

I'm not going to screw anything up by sanding it. Am I?

Crocus cloth is not very abrasive, it should remove the rust with out harming the spindle.
