Trouble refueling '88 F250
I just bought a 1988 Ford F-250 Diesel (7.3L I believe). I've been to 6 gas stations and I can't manage to get more than a very light stream of diesel into the tank without overflowing the stupid thing. It's too cold out to be going at a rate of 1 gallon per minute. 1. Is this a common problem, 2. Am I the biggest idiot in the country, and 3. Is there an easy solution(s) to this problem--both stop gap and permanent. I'm new to diesels but this is ridiculous! Thanks all.

Hey Red,
I would look under the truck and see if your filler hose is bent or kinked. If it is you might have to undo it from the tank or filler neck and smooth it out. If this looks good I would look at the vent line running along the filler tube. If it is bent or clogged it will not be able to get air and puke fuel back at you trying to get air in the tank. I had to pull the vent line off the fron tank on my 86 and run a piese of coat hanger down it then blow it out with the air compressor. The mud bees built a nest in mine for some reason. Hope this helps

If all else fails, park the rear tire on a 4" block wood before you start to fuel up.

No, that is NOT normal. I have a 1987 F-250 four wheel drive with 6.9 liter diesel and I can pump diesel into the filler neck as fast as the pump will pump. I have never had your problem but I used to date a girl that had that problem on her pick up and it was a damaged tube between the gas cap and the gas tank. Sounds like it will have to be a damaged tube or vent tube or something in the tank itself.

I have an 87 F250 with Dual Rear Wheels, This is what I have found, because I like getting fuel at trucks stops, I can not use the same pumps as the trucks, but if I use an auto pump with a smaller nossel it will take fuel very fast, it seems that because diesel use a large diamiter nossel many times it effects the return air coming back out of the tank, via the intake hose, causing the fuel to back fill. Try locating a filling station with a smaller nossel, simular to the gas nossel, this may work for you, it does for my truck

I have a '89 F-350 7.3L and i have the same problem. my hose was fine, i thought it was just the fuel pump. i have been to hess and truck stops and the same thing, i usually try and stuff something under the handle and get back in my truck. im up in the northeast where the windchill is easily below zero, sorry if this doesnt help, but good luck.

I just replaced a tank on my truck and am having the same problem now. I believe it is related to the vent hose that runs from the tank into the neck. I had also pulled the bed from my truck and when I took the fuel neck loose the vent hose also came out and I am sure I didnt get it back to the proper position. Not sure what position that is since it is not long enough to reach the top of the neck to the opening in the tank. But I am sure this is causing the problem of not taking the fuel in fast enough.
