My 99 power stroke has just start to blow white smoke out the tail pipe. It only has 104,000 miles on it. It blows the smoke a little at idle, but when I am driving it at a constant speed the smoke just pours out cold or at running temp. It has not stopped and is a lot of smoke. Also there is oil or something dripping out the tail pipe also. Does anyone know what could be wrong and how much it will cost to fix.
Sounds like coolant entering the combustion chamber to me. See if you are loosing coolant out of the radiator. If so you'll need to do a leakage test to see if the location of the problem can be found. If the leakage test indicates no leakage it could be an O-ring on the injector in which case you'll be using a lot of engine oil (check your oil -- if it is low you've blown an O-ring, if it is milky you've got coolant in it). If you are under 100,000 miles you should be covered under waranty. Let us know what you find.
The turbo system went on me. Oil got into the system and fried it. That is why it was smoking so bad. I lost 5 qts of oil because of it. I had a feeling that something like that was wrong. I took it in at 99,000 miles because of access oil coming out of the rubber boots on the turbo tubes. Ford said it was the clamps and just changed clamps to fix the problem. Now this happens 4,500 miles later. I think it was a problem before, and they just covered it up, because the Miles were almost up for warranty. Now they want me to pay for it.
Take your documentation to the dealership that wants you to pay for this repair and tell them you think the problem was there at 99,000 miles and try to negotiate a deal with them. If they won't budge find out who the district rep is and sing your song to him. Also, make sure they keep all the parts that they replace to be returned to you after the fix. You've got no case without those parts as evidence. If a warranty claim were to be processed, Ford isn't paying the bill anyway -- Navistar is. You may want to remind them of that fact.
I got my truck back and the dealer ship paid for it. The bill was for $3000 dollars. The Water pump went bad, the turbo had to be replaced and with lossing 5 qts of oil, messed up the high pressure oil pump. they replaced it all and flipped the bill. Thanks guys.
