I bought my wife a KIA Rio Thursday. At 500 miles its required to go back to the dealership for the first oil change. When I get it back home, I plan to change thier oil and filter out for Mobil 1 synthetic with 5k mile oil changes(well within warranty). Do you think I'm correct in waiting 500 miles to allow enough break in before beginnng synthetic oil?
From the Redlineoil.com FAQ's: "Can I break-in my engine on Red Line Oil? We recommend using petroleum 10w30 motor oil on break in to ensure proper piston ring seating. If you allow 1500 to 2000 miles in a street engine or 20 to 30 minutes on the dyno at low rpm, the rings will have had sufficient time to seat and the high initial break-in wear will have occurred."
Here I think you are better off playing it safe and running a little longer on dino. Why waste the dealer change ? I'd run it 2000-3000 miles and then switch to synthetic. Mobil 1 is a group IV, but Redline passenger car oils are Group V, which is supposed to be even better. Might want to check them out, but it will cost about 80 percent more than Mobil 1.
The European Redline site has more info on breakin procedures at redlineoil.co.uk
cant say for sure since my explorer is used but i think the owner did the first one at 1000 miles and then used dealer changed Motorcraft full synthetic, which i heard to be "fake synthetic".

Thanks guys. Waiting is just what I'm gonna do. I'll hold off till that next oil change.
My wife doesnt want me changing the oil in her car, although I always have.........afraid of the warranty be voided. I called said no way if I have the reciepts. So I called the dealership. They say true. Any professional garage is fine, but no shade tree stuff. Turns out they only want $9.99 an oil change for the brands they sell....and if I bring the oil and filter.....it's only $3.50 Awsome!!!
I'm no longer complaining about not being trusted. Thats a fair deal.

As much as I enjoy changing my own oil (really, I do) $10 is cheap for a dealer change so long as they are using an API/SL oil and a decent filter. I don't know the exact wording of your warranty (should be in your warranty booklet), but keeping all oil and filter receipts and logging the date and mileage of each oil change covers you under most warranties if you stay within correct intervals and use the appropriate oil and filter.
