hey guys, my '84 460 runs at about 75-80psi at cold idle (depending how cold it is outside) and will stay there till she warms up to about 200-210 degrees, then it comes down to about 25-30psi at warm idle and about 50psi when i'm cruising....
i was just wondering if these were normal? my friend's 4-cylinder nissan comes down to about 3psi at hot idle, but i can understand that
BLaCkSiLo: You are doing fine. What weight oil are you using? I have a 1990 460 in my motorhome that I am running 10w30 in. I get around 70+ psi cold, 56-60 hot at 2000 and 25-35 hot at idle.
yeah, i'm running standard valveoline 10w30, it does, it runs right at about 80....
tallpaul, you get almost exactly as i do, and a funny thing is, when it get about 1/2-1 quart low on oil, the pressure seems to be higher when crusing and idle, then i know its time to check it

That's strange. I would expect the lower quantity to run hotter, thin out, and lower the oil pressure. Anyway, it works for you as an indicator of low oil.
What is also strange is that on my recent trip from Detroit to Montana and back the motorhome would drop to 56 under really hard use (high speed, heavy headwinds, etc). It did that both going out to Montana and coming back, but always east of the Missouri River. West of the Missouri it pretty much stayed up around 60 psi even under really hard driving (and there I had steeper grades). Maybe it's the altitude reduced barometric pressure enough to maintain the 60 psi.
yeah, that is kinda interesting, altitude has a funny way of screwing with things,
another reason that my oil pressure reading might be a little weird is because i live in Portland, Oregon and it rarely gets below 40 degrees farenheit here and never is really about 100, so starts in the morning are really easy and the pressure is about 80
460 oil pressure relief is set at about 75psi which is the 351w is 60psi.
Good point. Seems you can pretty much figure your cold pressure is the relief valve setting. I ran 30 weight and 40 weight in my pickup and had significantly different hot pressures, but the cold pressures were the same (about 55 psi).
