New member needs advice
I just bought a little project and have been looking up everything and anything on it over the last month. Almost every Internet search returns a hit from this site so I figured it would be a good idea to join the group.
My “new’ truck is a ’71 f100 explorer 4x4. It’s got a re-built 360 with an Edelbrock intake and 4 valve Holly carb that runs really well. Drive train is C6 w/ new process 205 transfer case. It’s been modified already, as the 4x4 drive train is not original but out of a 78 F150, (most of which I’m in the process of replacing). The previous owner towed it up from Phoenix four years ago so the body is minty fresh for a ‘71
The bad news is I haven’t even been around the block in it yet. The previous owner dropped it into low gear on the highway shattering the transmission housing, the extension housing to the transfer case, bent both drive shafts and snapped the collar off the rear differential. When the drive shaft was free of the rear it took out most of the exhaust too. …..Nice one eh?. It must have made a hell of a bang.
The good news is that I now have everything to put it back together. Re-built tranny, custom shafts, collars and housing off a junk yard Bronco. I’m going to let speedy handle the exhaust.
I’ve read that the NP205 transfer case is a solid unit but due to the extent of damage done to the rest of the drive train I’m reluctant to put it back in even though it appears to me to be good. Does anyone know how to verify a transfer case on a work bench?
I’d also like to know if anyone would be willing to share soft copy shop manuals on any part of this truck. The best price I’ve seen on the web is $50 USD and I’d need to get both ‘71 and ’78 versions due to the mods.
Thanks and nice to meet you all.
Regards,
John
