I have a 78 ford f150 and it has a 77 ford f100 rearend on it now. I also have an 82 ford f100, will the rear end off the 82 f100 fit on my 78 ford truck.
what exactly is 9", sorry if i sound stupid. I have that 77ford f100 rear end and was told it was a 3.34 gear ratio? because it was off a f100 6cylinder
chances are, the 82 is an 8.8", as they were very common from my observations in the 80's...the best way to determine if your 82 rear end will fit is if your spring mounts are the same distance apart on both rear ends...should be able to take a tape measure and check the distance of both fairly easy...if the numbers match up, then it'll fit...if not, you'll hafta find a new rear end that will fit...
also...if your 78 is a 4x4, you'll hafta make sure that your gearing matches on front and rear axles, as you will quickly blow your front and/or rear ring and pinions if they aren't matched...if it's a 2wd vehicle, then it's no big deal and you can put any gear ratio under it that you so desire...
If the truck is a 1982 it should have a 9" rear. 1983 was the first year ford started using 8.8 rears in trucks. Only 1/2 ton trucks to recieve a 9" rear in 83-86 was the 5.8 HO, 5.0EFI with manual trans, 5.8 2V with manual trans.
An 8.8 will work in a 73-96 ford. At least a 73 and up 9" will fit on any ford f-150 73-96, so I imagine it'll work. Take a tape and measure the spring pads, I think you'll find them the same.

I have a 1983 e150 I6 300 with a 9 inch 3.00 open c6
its now a parts truck
Well, I hate to diagree, but I pulled a 9" with 2.47 from an '83 F-150 300-I6 with 3-on-the-tree, and an '84 with a 3.50 9", a 300-I6, and 3 speed with overdrive.
I think they made there way into whatever truck ford felt like it, and I think it might have been an option at one time.
I'd like to see the manual you got your info out of.
I dont know about E150's, but from what ive seen is all 82 and prior 1/2 ton trucks came with 9" rears. Now I have seen a 78 F100 with what looked to be a dana 44 rear, but not to sure. I had a 83 F100 with a 300 and it had a 8.8 rear. I own a 86 F150 with a 302 and a C6 and it has a 8.8 rear. My freind has a 86 F150 with a 302 and four speed OD and he has a 9" rear in his truck. I owned a 84 F150 with a 2V351 with a 4 speed and it had a 9" rear. All of the 1/2 ton trucks from 84-86 with a 351HO v8 that I have seen have had a 9" rear. I guess ford did not think the 8.8 would hold up to higher HP applications, I dont know. But I am just stating what i have noticed. I have also seen many different 80-86 Ford trucks in the junk yard, and it seems they all follow that same pattern.
