Took my truck in with an engine light on Wednesday. Got it back Thursday. Fault code P2263 was the cause of the "chip" light. Here's the catch... Ford does not have a fix to the problem. The engineers are "working on it." The fault is on the Turbo Charger Boost System Performance monitoring. They reflashed my PCM to clear the fault, but tonight the idiot light is back... I assume it's the Turbo again, but have no way to tell for sure. Pretty annoying.
Anybody else have this type of problem? Ford issued a service bulletin (17701) addressing the fact that no current remedy to the situation.
Low Power/No Boost and/or Code P2263:
If the turbocharger is suspected to be the cause of low boost, it should be tested by manually activating the variable geometry turbo control valve. The engine should be at operating temperature. Using the WDS active commands in datalogger, monitor EBP, VGT%, RPM abd MGP. Set the RPM to 1200 and the VGT% to 0 and record the EBP and MGP readings. Increase VGT to 85% and watch for an increase in EBP and MGP, and listen for a whistle from the turbo. If there is no pressure increase or whistle, check the control wiring for the VGT by installing a est light in the VGT harness and commanding the VGT from 0-85%--the light should be off and then slowly brighten. If the wiring checks out, replace the VGT control valve (P/N 3C3Z-6F089-AA) and retest. If the condition is unchanged, then replace the turbocharger. Broadcast Message 0887.
Engineering is currently investigating false P2263 codes. Broadcast Message 1290
I wonder if they did all the tests up to changing the turbo.
Are you happy with the dealer? You might want to try a second opinion?
Make sure they sell a lot of trucks and have certified diesel techs. What part of the country are you located? Some of the FTE members can recommend good service departments.

Yes, I've enjoyed browsing the site over the past few weeks! I'm in the San Diego area and have owned Fords for the better part of 20 years, but this is my first diesel. I also added some more info to my profile now that I see the quality of the FTE site. Kinda keep that stuff "close hold" when it comes to most internet sites... Thanks again for your help!
San Diego should have several good Ford service departments. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
When you walk into a service department and pull out a document of a Ford service bulletin, chances are you will get a sigh, rolling of the eyes or they look at you like you are standing there eating raw chicken heads. That has been my experience with the service advisors. They hate it when you know more than them.

glk: I'm very interested in your experience. Do you know which code kept coming back? How many times? Did you have to go through the "lemon" process or did Ford just admit fault?
I really like my truck and am not trying to find a way out of it, but if Ford can't get it fixed then I need all the background you guys can offer.

The fault code was the 2663. They tried multiple times to fix it and replaced the turbo 4 times and had an engineer from ford come out with new parts and exchanges. He thought he fixed it but when he was finished and smiled then the light came on and the smile went away and the district rep offered an new truck. I cam in every time the light came on. Mine was coming on about once every 4 days. The cost of tech time was going up each day and the truck was going to be a loss of profit. They knew they had a problem with the lemmon law and they couldn't fix it.
I have never got a engine light, but my turbo will "pulsate" on my 6.0L. I am not experiencing any loss in power, but you can definitely hear the pulsating inside and outside the cab. I have taken it to Ford and they said the last "Flash" on the PCM is causing the pulsating in the 03's that are up to date on the flashes. The problem is that each person I run into with a 03 is not up to date on their flashes, so they are not experiencing anything like this. Did any of you with this code experience this "pulsating" in the turbo? I am not receiving a engine light, but I wonder if I am having the same issues. Thanks.
