I currently have an 85 f-250 supercab that I use for work. The 6.9 seems to run wonderful except, that, when under full throttle it seems to blow a lot of blue smoke out the pipe. But, when just cruising, there doesn't seem to be a problem. only at high rpm. The truck gets 17 mpg and like I said sounds and drives great. Where do I start? Not knowing much about diesel motors, (but very interested in learning about them!) I would greatly appreciate any advice!
The oil usage is a bit high but cheaper than a rebuild. Nevertheless that is not your smoke problem because if it was, it would be worse at idle when the cylinder temperatures are not so high to clean up the smoke and less at high load when the oil would burn more completely. More likely it is some sort of injection issue. My favorite course of action is to sample the oil and look at what it says. If there is no evidence of a problem in the engine oil, any smoke issues are staying above the piston where they will do no harm. Just let it be in other words. I went and changed my injectors on mine with over 250,000 miles on them and nothing changed, still smoked, economy stayed the same.
One thing I have noticed is it helps to go over these IDIs and tighten up the oil leak that always develop, that alwauys cuts back on unnecessary consumption.
I think I agree with you on the injection issue. I started looking around under the hood again and was uncertain about the condition of the air filter. The "soup bowl" as I think its been called had oil dripping out of it. Is this a normal occurance, or could this be part of my oil consumption problem?
The oil in the intake is probably the result of your oil consumption rather than part of it. I think there is a lot of blowby which is very common and that is the CDR which is the diesel version of a PCV. So the more blowby the more oil will get carried into the intake which is what you are seeing. So don't let it bother you unless you have another reason to rebuild it such as low power or bad mileage.
