I'm a bit tapped on money so i'm coming here to hopefully find a faster answer to what my problem might be.
Here's the problem:
For about the last 2 or 3 weeks I have had a problem with my '83 bronco when i would first drive it. It would idle perfectly fine, but once i hit the gas it sputters and would barely go anywhere. It was starting to get really bad over the last week and would even stall at times also.
I changed the spark plugs hoping it was a problem with them, i put new ones in correctly gapped and it ran fine for about the first 5 mins, and then tried dying on me when i stopped. I found out the problem there was a loose spark plug wire.
So then i went to drive it again after rechecking the gap and wire connections, and it would sputter when i would accelerate, and it does it regardless of having driven the truck already or not.
I replaced the distributor cap and rotor as they were corroded but it's not a problem there either.
I'm thinking my next step should be to replace the wires but they only have about 10-20k miles on them and seem fine?
I was originally looking for a vacuum line diagram/schamatic for a 84' f-150, 351w 4brl.. But coming across this posting, it sounds like i have the same problem as your having. The truck will start and idle great. Sounds like a engine should. But after about 5 minute of driving the truck, it decides to die on me. I have tried the same things as you have, plus some. I believe it has to do with the vacuum lines, or the fuel lines. It could also(maybe) be the whole fuel-air compression system, which is the carborator. Any thing anyone could tell me to help out would be great. My only mode of transportation is down till i find out what it is exactly.
I know to some people this may seem wrong , but in the past ive have had
the same problem and it was a slowly failing fuel pump. These 351ws seem
to eat fuel pumps after buying bad one after bad one at the parts stores
i bought a hp holley. And problem gone!
I agree with JWatylor. Check the simple stuff first. Check your fuel filter. also check your timing is correct and check that your accelerator pump is working.
