Well I finally got my alternator wiring fixed on my 72 F100 and now I have new problem.
I let the truck run testing the alternator wiring update and after about 10 minutes I got a loud bang and then smoke coming out of the carb. The truck had not run for more than 10-15 min at a time over the last 6 months while I have been learning what else I can find wrong with it.
My question to you experts (since this is the first time I have tried to restore a truck or car) is what would cause this bang and then grey/black smoke from the carb? I let it cool, took off the air filter, and restarted it only to get more smoke. The butterfly looks very black now. The carb is the main thing I have not replaced on the engine (which supposedly only has 25000 miles since it was rebuilt), is it time for a new carb? Does this sound more serious?
FYI, I have a couple of OK alternator wiring harnesses, if anyone needs one I would be happy to drop one in the mail for some good advice! I know they can be a bear to find and I got these from the junkyard last week.
I have a buddy that could really use a good alternator wiring harness but first I gotta think of what your problem is, maybe first do a compression check to verify everything mechanical is ok. I've seen this happen once when a tach wire melted on the header, a couple of smokey backfires and then died. Hopefully it's ignition or carbureter but do the compression test first and cross your fingers the timing chain didn't jump.
Yes, it is an old Holley, I have been putting off rreplacing it while I worked through some other issues. I will try the compression test and see what that brings! Thanks.
