Trouble removing EGR valve

My buddy has a 96 exlporer with the 4.0 and we were having a hell of a time trying to remove the egr valve. The main line coming from the headers has a large screw joint going into the egr valve. It seems seized up and we cant really tell if we need to turn counter clock wise or clockwise to remove it. Anyone have any experience with this? much appreciated!

You turn it clockwise. It's a big nut sitting on that line. I fought with it for good 45 mins. I removed it with adjustable wrench. Hope this helps.

Soaking is a good idea. I also needed an adjustable wrench. Remember, righty tighty, lefty loosey!
