got a '97 with a 5.4. a while back she started missing going up hills, then would smooth out on level ground. turned out to be a bad COP. well, it's doing it again. i'm not getting a check engine light, so i don't know which one is causing the problem. is there a way to bench test these things?
Not that I'm aware of. The tool makers do make a nifty little tool to check them while running. You hold it in top of the coil and it will light up if the coil works. Only problem is you have to be able to get it to do it standing still. I use a tool from ford to diagnose them.
It will cost a few bucks but your dealer can do a cylinder power balance test with their WDS scan tool. I assume that is what ranger88a is talking about. A miss usually shows up easily.
I'm not around my Chilton's right now but it has a method of testing. You would have to test them all until you find the right one but if you disconnect the wires and test the resistance across the two leads a functional COP should have a certain resistance. (4-10 ohms if I remember right) Also, the only COP I had fail physically changed color to a brown almost brittle look so you might, possibly be able to see a difference with a good flashlight.
my FORMER mechanic replaced the COP last time, so i didn't see the plug. w-a-y too long a story to explain why he's my former mechanic. i keep reading here that it's not as hard as it looks to get them out, so i thought i'd give it a shot. just don't know what to do with em once i get em out.
The COP is held down with a bolt, 7mm socket. You want to look inside of the boot to see if there is a line. Looks like a pencil line. Also check for cracks or holes in boot, damaged connection(on harness and COP). Hope this helps.
