Ok I got this off a guy at work and he had to move so he did not have time to finish getting it to run like it should. He only had time to get it started. It starts and runs but wont idle. he started it up at his house to let me hear it run and it sounded good. I started it at my house when I got it home and shortly after it started i get this clattering noise alot of clattering. It sounds like valve lifters clattering to me but am a novice at this engine stuff. So I called him and he said that he thought the idle problem was carb. and said that the valves may need adjusting as they were only bench adjusted before start up.And it needs to have a timeing light put on it and adjusted What should the timeing be set at? This engine is a 289 out of a 67 fairlane and said that it has flat top pistons and HP 289 heads and said that compression is about 10 to 1 does that sound right. If it is 10 to 1 what octane of fuel should I be running in it and what is a good brand of octane booster if I am going to need to add it to the fuel? He said it has a compleat rebuild everything is new. Also where on the engine and heads canI find id. numbers to see what block and heads they are for sure. Thanks Brian
The 289 HO heads are easily identified by a cast cup that holds the springs which no other head has. The below link will show exactly what I am talking about.
You can also identify the heads by taking the intake off. Put a mirror under the intake port of the head and look for a four character code beginning with a "C" as the hipo 289 heads with be either C3OE / C4OE-B / C5OE-A / C5AE-E.
The quality of gas varies from area to area so you'll probably have to just filler up and see what works, I knew of someone who claimed the outlaw octane booster helped. Might start your timing out at 6-8 BTDC to get it going and then when you get the motor running decent start playing around with the timing. Good luck
