It will physically bolt up. The issue you have is the flexplate. Looking in the Summit catalog, it was '82 when they converted to 50 oz. balance weight on flexplate. This meaning you need to use the late model one, but I'm not sure if the convertor will bolt up from your old C4??? As long as the convertor will match the pattern, all else will bolt right up.
Watch the water pump. They made reverse rotation models when they switched to serpentine belt. I would use the one from your old motor(or a rebuild model made for '72).
Does it have a fuel pump hole in timing cover?? Or are you using an electric model?? I'm not real familiar with all the little changes thru those years, but I know there could be issues there also.

Yes you have a lot of checking to do. Not only is the water pump RR, so is the alternator, it will work but overheat going backwards. Maybe keep everything Lincoln on the motor swap and adapt the harnesses over using the tech article but it's a lot of work:

They should be.......But I don't know if the rest of the parts will work... There is no provision for a mechanical fuel pump on the 86, and I don't remember if the timing chain housings are the same except for the hole.

Im hoping it is a c6 tranny inthe 1972 302 van, not sure but Im NOT going for all the
power steering , air conditioning or power brakes, just want the stripped down engine
for power no frills

72 engine swap
302 engine swap with 86 linc cont. To 1972 302 van with c6 tranny.
Will it work??? Not sure about tranny bolt up. or flex plate compatability.
Can I switch the heads from a 86 302 linc cont. onto a 72 302 block
