A few years ago someone posted a brand of thermostats that will fail open & not closed. Anybody know the name & where you can buy them???

It appears they were a short lived endeavor. The little bit of web searching I did showed them to have a high failure rate since they were low in quality.

MotoRad makes the FailSafe t-stat and you can get them at most parts place. I got one a few months ago for my Bronco at Autozone. They are ~ $10 or $12.

I had one in an 85 Ranger almost 10 years ago. They are all I run anymore.

Here is their site FailSafe T-Stat/MotoRad

I was NOT real happy when the factory T-stat stuck shut on my new 87 Ranger at 5 K miles, luckily it did'nt do any damage to the engine. For the last 217K miles I've been using Toyota T-stats & no more problems. That fail safe looks interesting, I think i'll check it out.

I've had two MotoRad FailSafe t-stat, and they both failed shut going up hills. I also tried a hi-flo model, recommended for towing. It also failed shut on an Interstate.

They are supposed to fail open when the fail. That is why they are called failsafe. If they fail shut going up hill, you will not be going up hill very far with a roasted engine.

I found it easier to remove the valve when going on my trips. The engine pretty much needed max cooling anyway. I put it back when I returned, as I live in Manitoba. Three boilovers in the Rockys, was three to many. Good thing I had a Murphy Switchgage installed on the coolant with a buzzer on the contact.
