Please help, but keep it simple

I'm new to this site and very excited (I pick up my new to me F150). I just bought a supercab 4x4 off road 5.4 with only 35,000 miles. everything is stock and I want to upgrade a couple of things. The air filter will be #1 and that looks pretty simple, but the exhaust seems to be very overwhelming. Can anyone break down what I need to upgrade the exhaust (kits, manufacturer, types, sounds, etc.) I'm very handy (a carpenter) and would like to tackle it myself. Is it possible for a guy that knows nothing about exhaust to do something like this?

If you know how to weld you shouldn't have any trouble...

A buddy did this to his 5.4l 99 F350. He had a single inlet/dual outlet 2 chamber flowmaster put behind the cat then 2.5 inch pipe ran back behind the tires at a angle w/ big chrome echo tips welded on. Sounded damn good, especially at low rpms.

The Borla exhaust kit I bought didn't even require welding, it came from the factory shipped to my door with welded on tips. All the rest was clamped on, a very easy install. I'm somewhat mechanically inclined and this was a VERY simple process, I'm sure if your a carpenter and therefore used tools it will be easy for you. Just look for kits that dont require any welding.

Yea, all the kits I know of just clamp on. The biggest thing is cutting the old pipe in the right spot. Then thats what the instructions are for.

Get in and start vehicle, drive to exhaust/muffler shop, pay them to do it.
Probably come out cheaper, and you'll have someone to blame if there are problems.
If you must do it yourself, buy a complete kit.

I just really don't like exhaust work, it's pipes, too much like plumbing.

Thanks for the advice all. I think I'll look into all my options. I do want to avoid welding if at all possible.

If you want to do it yourself, take Rambos advice or find a friend that knows how to weld.

Good luck.

They actually are clamped on in front of the muffler, so every kit I've ever seen just requires you to remove that clamp and slide the old exhaust system off, then clamp on the new one. There shouldn't be any cutting or welding involved, I'd make sure to look for a kit that specifically states that.
