What front end do I have???

Hey I am getting ready to do the gear ratio change in my truck and there seems to be some confusion.

I have a 2004 Ford F250Sd 4x4
I believe it is a Dana 60 but in reading another post there may be Dana 50 parts in it??? My drive line guy says that if it is a 60 so are all the parts.

Here is the tag numbers off the front housing.
DANA 373V3C34-FC
611337

Thanks for the help...

when you order gears you should just have to tell them what year/model you have and theyll send you the right gears.. if they cant do that call somewhere else... i got my precision gears from Driveterrain direct.. no problem.. just said i had an 01 F250 gasser.

You have a dana 60. They changed from the dana 50 to the dana 60 in 2002. A dana 50 is a dana 60 axle housing with dana 44 parts.

Are you sure???????????? So in theory I could pick up a 50 cheap and swap out all the innards and have a 60?!?!?!?!?!?!

Yes I'm pretty sure. My source is from Peterson 4 Wheel and Offroad, love that mag. The cost though of buying a 50 and swaping the inners if you could with a 60 would put you back to the price of a 60. Why does your SD have a 50?

It doesn't but I need one for my Jeep. I can get the 50 cheap and then it would need gears and shafts anyway. I already have the locker.

I'm not exactly sure if you could swap the inners out. It would be worth investigating though.

NO!! A 50 LOOKS like a 60, but the casting is entirely different. The carrier bearings are much smaller, the pinion section is totally different. There is absolutely no commonality between a 50 centersection and a 60 centersection other than the fact that to the UNTRAINED eye they appear similar.

I'm 100% sure.

I am my source. I used to work for Dynatrac and have plenty of experience with the guts of both 50s and 60s.

The 50 castings have much smaller features cast into the housings for the carrier bearings, an entirely different pinion cavity and accept a smaller oil seal at the axle shaft. Remember that a 50 uses a 30 spline axle shaft with a 1480 series (Dana 60 sized) yoke. So in essence you have a 1.5" Dana 60 shaft thats been machined down to 1.31" and 30 spline. The seal surface is at the necked down area. Additionally, it uses a thinner cover with less room for the ring gear than a 60.
