performance tips for 5.4

What would you recommend I could do to increase the performance for a 2000 F150 5.4 4x4? I have always been a Ford fan it started with a 1970 Cougar w/351c, 80 mustang w/302, 84 F150 w/302, 90 explorer, 01 Ranger, my wife's 02 Explorer and now I found a sweet deal on this 00 F150 (35,000 miles). I just need to know some cheap ideas to increase performance. Filter? Exhaust? Chip? etc?

I'm new to this forum so take it easy on me
Thanks

My 2000 F150 with the 5.4L gets great mileage. All I have done was to put a Vibrant cat-back exhaust on it and a K&N air filter. I have calculated my best gas mileage to be just over 19 mpg. I am in the process of investigating chips now. Good Luck Mindy

I would suggest reading a couple pages down in this forum, theres probably a topic or two on every page about performance mods for the 5.4L engine.

It is common for people to do exhaust, air intake, chip or tuner.

A chip will increase performance, but if you are not burning premium with them the power difference is not all that noticeable. Superchips and Hypertech make fairly decent programmers. I would recommend the Hypertech. (bad luck with superchip). Could add 10% horse and 13% torque (that's what they claim)

Is there any suggestion as to what I should start with? I'm really looking into a new fliter system because they aren't very expensive and seem like a no-brainer to install. What makes K&N so much more popular over the others? Cost seems to be about the same from what I've seen.

I could be wrong, but I think it is because K&N has the better marketing scheme and they were the first company to start mass producing aftermarket filters for a lot of different vehicles. If you're the first one to start doing something, you're usually the name on everyone's lips.
