Just Curious As To What Weight Oil Everyone Uses In There Explorers? I Have A 96 4.0l With 130,00 Miles. Have Used 5w-30 In The Past, Started Using 10w-30. Any Problems With This?
I use synthetic (Mobil 1) 5W-30 in my '95 with over 140,000 miles. I believe most manufacturers went to lower weight oil for increased gas mileage. On a higher mileage engine I can't imagine that 10W-30 wouldn't be fine, especially during the summer.
i have a 98 5.0 with 150,000 and I use 10w-30 valvoline semisynthic for higher milage engines. I also experimented with Lucas Oil stablizer, i replaced one quart with it. Good results, quieter engine, less lifter/rocker sound. Yes that is prolonging the inevidable overhaul, but its cheaper right now.
Now that i have said that, someone will post a link to a site that is supposed to scare you out of using it b/c agitation leading to airation, personally I find it to be misleading. But I digress.
I wouldn't use 5w oil in a lawnmower. LOL even though it is reccommended in some vehiles the minimum i'd use is 10 w 30. I had an 81 cutlass that ran 15w40 year round and the body fell off of it before the engine quit. (over 380000 kms on engine) Even when it was 40 below she'd still crank over LOL
well you have a point about the 15w-40. At the fire department i work at every vehicle from the big engines, ladders, ambulances, to the staff cars(crown vics and explorers) they all get 15w-40. Its labeled "heavy duty fleet oil." never had an engine failure.
Been running Pennzoil 5W-30 in my 99 SOHC X for 47000 miles. I sometimes get some lifter noise on initial startup or on a hot restart after it has been sitting for about 30 minutes. No problems to date, though. Still worried about the dread chain tensioner though.
I think we are all worried about that. Im creepin up on my 72K mile point where its my problem. I think Im gonna get the tensioner recall done AGAIN just to be safe.
At least its good to know that if, by very bad luck, you have to buy your X a new engine due to tensioner failure that Ford has fixed the problem in the new engine. I drove an X with the pushrod V-6 and I must say that I really like the power the SOHC engine delivers over that of the pushrod motor. I guess my worry that the tensioner will fail is the price I pay for lots of power.
