I have a 1990 F150 5.8... when I start it in the morning or after it sits at work all day it starts extreamily rough, it will spit and sputter for the first 10 seconds or so and then will pick up a normal idle and it runs fine once it gets going. any ideas what can make this motor do this??
The timing is set to 10 degrees as directed by the emissions tag under the hood...
I have been trying different things and found if I cycle the key 4 times (prime the fuel pumps) that it will start up smooth.
How many fuel pumps are there in the fuel system? I know that there must be at least one in each of the two tanks, but is there a boost pump on the frame somewhere?
the truck has new fuel filter, new plugs, new wires, new IAC valve, new O2 sensor, new air charg temp sensor, new water temp sensor for the computer the one for the gauge appears to working properly.
1990 was the first year for the in-tank high pressure pump. Meaning that there is one pump per fuel tank.
Since priming the pump helps the truck start, the first thing I would do is check the fuel pressure. I'm not sure offhand what the pressure should be for a 351, but it's on this forum somewhere. You can get a gauge for about $30 at a parts store.
