I removed a defective neutral/backup lamp switch from my 89 F150 4WD 5 litre AOD transmission and now I can't get the old or the new switch to thread back in. When I took the old switch out it felt relatively loose. The threads on the switch won't start in the threads in the transmission. I get absolutely zero thread engagement. When I put the switch in the hole it is very loose and has a lot of side to side movement. Using a mirror I can see threads in the hole at the bottom and they look O.K. It seems like the switch is sitting on top of the threaded portion of the hole. The new switch looks identical to the switch that was in the hole, except the new switch has four terminals and the old has five. The transmission is a Jasper rebuild and I wonder if the threads could be different/defective. The numbers on my transmission are RF-E9DT-7006AA, if this makes sense to anybody.
Any recommendations?

Reason: forgot detail
Set the parking brake, chock the wheels, and move the transmission through the gears (try N first). It might be as simple as the switch is sitting on top of a rail when it is in park and the only way for it to drop into the hole (since the ball end is spring loaded) is for the rail to move out of the way or for it to move to a notch in the rail where the switch will drop all the way down. Then the threads will engage.
