New vs Old Upper Intakes

Hello all

doing some reading i am finding that the new plastic upper intake gives about 10 more hp than the old aluminum one...

does any one know if this is really true?

second, if it is better - is the black plastic one "taller" than the old aluminum one? it seems that the plastic one leans up over the valve cover, not rested in between the valve covers like the aluminum one...

i am basing all of this off of web pictures and posts - i need to get to a new vulcan and find out, but any help would be great....

thanks
Jake

Those are good questions about the upper intake(s), Jake. I'd also be interested in hearing from people who may have some information or ideas on the subject.

i have read that they are not interchangable unless you change the lower intake as well...no information given on height differences

I have a 94 taurus with the aluminum intake and an 02 taurus with the plastic. I don't drive the 02 much but it feels as though the 94 is a little snappier. Of course it could be that when I drive the 02 I have the wife and kids with me. If I can get a sitter I will put my wife in one and me in the other and line em up.

There are slight differences betwee the composite (plastic) and aluminum UIM, mainly to the EGR system. The composite UIM frees up more Hp because it is 1. smoother inside with less air resistence, and 2. a thermal insulator providing less heat transfer to the air induction system and therefore a cooler, denser air charge.

I have heard many peopl talk about the modification, but I don't know anyone who has done it. I installed a phenolic spacer betwee my LIM and UIM as well as PnP my UIM to achieve the same effect as a compsite UIM.

The Gen 4 taurus (00-current) is heavier than the gen 2 (91-95). Also, the EEC "learns" driving styles and adjust torque convertor lockup and shiftpoints to match driving styles. Unplug your battery in the Gen4 for about 30sec., then hook it back up and take it for a spin. It will be much "peppier" since it isn't adjusted to your wife's driving stlye.
