Okay, I've been pulling my AC out a little at a time. Now I'm getting really sick of the giant box under my hood and I want to get it out of there but I'm not sure how to go about it. If I unbolt the box from the firewall and take it out will I lose my blower motor or is there a second fan somewhere for the heater? Also wondering where my heater hoses go when the box is gone. I'm not sure if there's already a place to attach them at the firewall or if I have to plumb that. Is there anymore junk I can lose up under my dash when this comes out? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
I got sick of that big AC box on my 79 F250 also so I took it out. Now I'm in the process of making a new box to hold the heater core and fan. I tried to use the high output heater but the box got too big. Now I have a standard heater core. It seems like it should work out pretty good. Should know this weekend hopefully. My new box will be tied into the original heat ducts so I will still be able to use the vents or whatever I like. The only thing I need to find is a "T" so I can bypass the heater core to control the heat.
In answer to your questions. There is only 1 blower fan for both heat and AC. If you remove the box you loose the blower. The heater core is mounted in the same box. If you remove the box it won't matter where the heater hoses go cause the core will be gone.
Maybe you can get a standard heater box from the junkyard and cover up the huge hole in the firewall with a piece of sheet metal then install the standard box.
Hahaha . . . NO! You saw how big that damn box under my hood is though, what a hassle! I hate the room it eats up in the engine compartment. Me thinks next month I have to make a trip to Pull & Save to get a heater box. Only thing I don't like is I don't think I can use the high output heater core without the AC. Gonna have to figure this one out.
Well this prospect is sounding less and less promising by the minute! I figured I could run my own duct work for the dash vents if I need to, that's not a big deal. Now I'm just concerned about the fan and heater core. I suppose it would be easiest to just pull the entire assembly out of a truck with no AC. I wish that damn box under the hood wasn't such a monster or it could stay.
I am pulling mine but retaining the AC. I am mounting the AC coils and Heater coil in line with a small space in between them. I have a couple of coils that look like they would fit but I need to ID them so I can get replacements. Someday I will make a trip to the radiator shop and look thru their books. I am using a ball valve for the heater volume control. It will not be as responsive as a blend door system but it should work for me. No gargantuan box under the hood either.
When you remove that big box, you are gonna have a hole big enough to crawl through. I did the exact opposite on my '77, added factory air after robbing two trucks (a '73 and a '79 extra cab) and I removed the factory heater and then had to cut that big hole in my firemall with a sabre saw after making a pattern from the hole left in the '79.
You will also not have a drivers side vent with the stock heater unless you add one (I kept that active in mine).
Why are you removing the AC? It wasn't that heavy. Nice on hot days, parts aren't too hard to find.
If you are determined, look at a heater like old cars had that were just a box with a heater core and fan in them, I think some camper places still list them for use in rear seat or cargo areas. I used to see them offered in JCWhitney for use in pickup beds, you might build one, and add ducting from a shop vac up to defroster vents.
Or just rob a whole nother truck of everything and make a template from the carcass to locate needed holes in the new firewall you will build from sheetmetal, or cut the donar truck from the center to right side getting the firewall, then cut the lip out of yours around that big hole and graft the donated firewall in place maybe. With just the factory heater stuff, the inside the truck part will need to be somewhat smooth where the heater mates to it, so if you use a lot of pop rivets do them from inside.
Ivan, mine has the high output heater core and no-AC...if you need to look at it sometime let me know.
and yes...that box is huge under the hood. You could convert it into a nice cat carrier though I bet If the misses has a cat, I'm sure it would like to go mudding with you!
I am planning on a small stainless steel box to house the two cores with a drain thru the firewall. It looks like I can fit it in with a hole on each side to match the existing ductwork for a heater only blower unit with a AC distribution box. I haven't got it all figured out tho. The truck, and many parts are in storage.
My 76 F250 has had the engine side AC components trashed or removed. So I plan on removing all of it and putting in the heater vent system from my old 75 F250 ( I took it all out ) These things I know:
* sheet metal over large hole in dash
* rewire so it all works ( I hope ) Are the wire colors the same?
Things I do Not Know:
Will it all just swap out?
Do I need any special parts etc.....
Does anybody want the AC controls and Box etc...(before I list it in
classifieds)
Is the firewall cover from LMC catalog worth it since mine is non existent?
Any and all help appreciated, I have never attempted something like this before so I just want to have all my ducks in a row before I begin.
