Yesterday I installed a 2 meter ham rig in my 99 and mounted it under the dash below the steering colum. Plenty of clearence for my long legs and seems to be a good place.
all the time in the off-road community. easy way to communicate on the trails about obstacles. it's actually a required piece of equipment to go trail riding with most clubs
i need on in my expedition for when i'm towing my jeep cross country with some friends.....we can communicate on the road.
ive been wondering the same thing.... mine looks just like yours intrepid, same color, wheels, etc... i cant see doin some half hack job just to put a cb in. i was thinking of mounting mine inside the console, but i cant figure out what sort of antenna to go with. we use ours on trips mainly, both our dads are prof. truck drivers, so we pretty much grew up having a cb in our vehicles on our grand cherokee, we had a 2' mounted to the roof basket, it looked ok, but for some reason i dont want to go that route... this truck is almost "too nice" to do something like that
I had a CB in my 96 Ranger. The antenna was mounted on the side of the bed and the cable came in through the floor. The CB I had was the Cobra one with everything in the mic unit, so there was no box to mount.
When I switched to the 03 EB, I figured the CB could hide in the 'walk-in' center console. But I could not put an antenna on the Ex. It looked too clean and too nice without a visible radio antenna. My CB went on the shelf and I picked up a handheld walkie-talkie style one instead. The reception sucks though.
I'm still hoping to find a hidden antenna that has decent reception. I want to use the CB in my Mustang but I don't want a visible antenna.
I mounted mine to the floor on the passanger side of the console. That way the screws went through the carpet instead of the console. The top of the radio is angled so it sits above the console and can be reached from the drivers seat. It almost touches the the console so it sits as close as I could get it to the console. I ran my antenna up through the roof in the back behind the luggage rack. That way it is easy to remove if clearance is a problem.
I mounted mine in the center console...already have the disc changer in there, so most of the space was used anyway. Mounted the Cobra 25 Classic and the speaker is lound enough that I can still hear it with the lid closed on the console...just run the mic cord through the top and close the lid.
As for the antenna...I bought a new Antek and had it tuned to the radio. The mount is a 90 degree mount that sets low profile out of the hood/fender on the driver's side. So when I am not using the CB...I can unscrew the antenna and leave the mount...barely visible.
