I have the rear end whine. It has been repaired twice so far. Ford service engineer checked it out. They state that it is normal and will not take any further action.
If this is normal then I would recommend that people don't buy an explorer..
I'm disappointed with the vehicle and with Ford's commitment to customer satisfaction.
As far as I know, the rear ead whine in question is on the newest generations explorers, '02 & '03. I have not hear much about it on the 04's.
I talked to the dealer today and the new rearend that was to be here today is still on order with Ford and will not be in until th 28th. I will pick it up in the morning and bring it back when the part gets in.
I too have the same whining problem with my '02 Explorer. Mine has a lil over 56,000 miles on it and whines on decel. I also have the front end popping/shudder noise when turning. I'm taking it to the dealer to see what they say. This is pretty agrivating. I've had nothing but Ford cars/trucks all my life. That's about to end though if this is the kind of product these fools are putting out there.
Have the rearend whine on 2002 explorer .ford will be replacing rear differential and drive shaft with new updated version.hope this does it .
Elmwood Ford repaired our 2003 Explorer rear end. I still hear a slight hum around 60 to 65 and around 31 to 33 MPH. My Brother has the same explorer with 3:55 axel no problems .
Ford dealer replaced the "differential carrier assembly" under waranty.
Got the X back and the whine is gone!!

Hopefully this is THE fix and it wont come up again.
I Have A 2004 Explorer Xlt. I Started To Hear A High Pitched Hum Comming From The Rear Of The Vechicle At Around 3k Miles. At First, I Thought It Was An Air Noise. I Noticed That I Only Heard The Noice When I Stepped On The Accelerator. That Ruled Out An Air Noise. Anyway, I Took It To The Dealer The Other Day And They Immediately Knew What It Was. They Said That They Have Seen This Before. They Ended Up Replacing The Read End. The Noise Is Gone. If You Are Experiencing This Problem, Go To The Dealer And Get It Fixed. What A Difference.
Dealer replaced reardif, everything seems to be working normal. All noises, squeaks and shudders are gone. Now, to get the rims replaced... clearcoat is chipping off from the center outward.
My 96 also whines. It's definitely coming inside the rear housing. I recently checked for lube and had to add a quart. The humming dimished but it did not go away. I have 163000 on mine (guess I can't complaint) but the whinning only started at about 130000. Other than that it's been a great vehicle.
03 XLT 3.55R - I also have this whine - although very slight, it is annoying. The question I have is why does the dealership want to say there is nothing wrong when they know ther is. Don,t they still get there money back from Ford anyway. Isn't this how they make money. My response from them was the same as a few of you, could not duplicate the problem. Now I have to take a test drive with a service tech. Waste my time or what.
Unfortunately, 02Explorer4x4, I can say my 04 has the rear end whining. It sounds horrible. I was hoping I'd find that it had some relation to the transmission problems I am also having with the POS, but it looks like I just ended up with an all around lemon and will be fighting the battle on two fronts!!!
