I have an 85 Ranger V6 2.8 with a center mounted fuel tank. I need the fuel tank sending unit and I contacted Ford dealer, price is $100.00. I tried other auto parts stores but they all said dealer item. Any ideas?
Thanks for any help

That sounds kind of low for a dealer part. A few weeks ago I asked how much mine was, it is the pump, sending unit, and fuel level for $185. It was some what cheaper at Advance Auto Parts. Also, if no one mentioned it before, you can pull the bed much faster than droping the tank.
Dumb question, but how do you know you have a bad one? There should be 2 pumps in your system, the low pressure in the tank, and the high pressure on the frame rail.

I guess I didn't explain well enough; this 85 has a carburator and the fuel pump is on the engine. I pulled the bed back far enough to get to the sending unit and took the fill hose off so I could look in the tank. The float and arm were on the bottom and when I pulled them up nothing happened so I jumpered across the 2 wires on the sending unit connector and the gauge registered.
Thanks for all of your responses.

Ahh... engine with a carb. That makes more sense. Sorry about that, on the 80's FI engines the sensor and all is part of the in-tank pump. Did your new sending unit have a new float on it? I am only asking because sometimes that float fills with fuel and stays on the bottom. When you said the float was on the bottom, was it submerged? Where did you get it? (1/2 price is much better)
The float I was describing was the old one. I have not purchased a new one mainly because I won't pay $100.00 for something that should only be $20.00 . Guess I'll just figure out MPG and keep track of fuel used that way.
