When the truck pours out black smoke on hard acceleration, what can I do. I have an 82 f250 with a 84 6.9 rebuild, standard transmission and 3.73 diffs. I have a problem on moderate grades just trying to get up the hill in fourth gear. In third its fine up until 70 kph when I have to shift to 4th because the engine is screaming. Is this normal to have problems in fourth on a moderate grade with no load? It's killing me, I'm so frustrated.
If a diesel is smoking black under accelaration, that means it is being overfueled due to a lack of air to fuel ratio. A simple adjustment or turbo will solve this.
People turn up the injection pump for means of increasing horsepower. You can stop the smoking by either turning the pump down or just knowing enough to keep your foot out of it.
Why you are not having enough power is beyond me. I nned more info.
Is there a lot of combustion noise when under a load?
How long has it been before the pump was rebuilt or replaced?
What percent grades are you climbing? , etc...
LAST EDITED ON 23-Jul-01 AT 11:53 AM (EST)[p]If this problem started all at once, it is probably time for an injection pump rebuild. These pumps need to be rebuilt about every 70,000-100,000 miles.
LAST EDITED ON 24-Jul-01 AT 08:44 PM (EST)[p]The motor was rebuilt at about 170k because the crank snapped. The engine got new rings, crank, cam and crank bearing, etc. The only thing not done was the heads. Now I'm losing oil (no leaking so I'm assuming burning through the valve seals) at a rate of about 4 liters every 1k. Compression is good between 375-390psi in the cylinders, and very little blowby if any. Dynamic timing was never done and I dont want to pay for it unless the pump is good. I think the pump is due for repacement as it now has about 220k on it. I replaced the injectors and it made no difference. Someone mentioned on the board about a injector pump rebuild kit, anyone know anything about them?

It is not worth the time and frustration trying to rebuild it yourself. I tried to do it and it was a disaster, so I took it back to the place and the had to also replace to housing because of the timing plunger hole was out of round. I am good for a while, but I think with that many miles it is time for a replacment.
