I really need help. My brake lights don't work. It is not the bulbs, and I could not find any blown fuses. If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate it. It may be a fuse or something that I cannot find. When I hook up my boat trailer, those lights don't work either, so I guess it must be in the electrical system. Thanks.
I forgot to mention. It is a 98 Ranger, and the brake lights are the only problem.
"I could'nt find any blown fuses", but did you actually check the brake light fuse? Look at the fuse page in your owners manual,it will tell you which fuse the brake lights are wired to. Check for 12 volts on the center electrode of a brake light socket. If theres no voltage check at the brake light switch. If there is voltage the socket isnt grounded.
my 83 had a problem with the brake lights and i fixed it by putting a new switch on it it was around 10.00 bucks. look under the dash at the the brake petal follow it up and there are 2-3 wires that go into a small black box (when you hit the brake it lets a push rod go in or out i cant remember , when the petal goes so far down) i cant remember how i took it out but i think all you need is a flat tip screwdriver
there are several things that can cause this. Is you truck an automatic or standard shift. There are different controllers for each. Find which fuse controls the brakes, and make sure there is power to the fuse panel and that the fuse is good. On the fuse panel, it should be on the left column, 4th down, and should be light blue. It also controls the PCM, 4WD and anti-lock system if you have those installed. If there is power to the fuse and it is good, next check the Brake on-Brake off switch (BOO). Its located under the hood next to the master cylinder. Pull the plug and check for 12v. If the voltage is there, check for continuity to the bulbs. The BOO is open with brake off and closed with brake on. If all of this is ok, let us know for more options. I am always suspicious when there are boat trailer plugs involved, because it usually means cut wires and splices. If there is power to the BOO, my guess is the trailer harness is the problem. Keep us posted.
Thanks for all of your help. The problem ended up being the brake sensor. I took it apart and cleaned it up. Put it back together and presto. Thanks for all of your help. I really appreciate it.
Yes. On the brake pedal. The little metal contacts were not working for whatever reason, but after taking it apart, and cleaning it all up, the problem was resolved. Good luck.

Dude, you guys rock !! Mine had the same problem and easily fixed in less than 1 minute with the electrical spray! Thanks for saving me time and money; I've got a ton of homework to do tomorrow and I didn't want to mess around with that!
