The man I work for has a 1994 F-250 with an auto trans and Powerstroke diesel. The truck has two problems. #1 you can be driving it and it will die suddenly. The owner seems to think that all accesories stay on (radio, clock, ect.). I was driving it once when it happened to me and I think all accesories shut off (I was getting ready to pull out onto a highway and can't really remember, as I was more concerned about getting it started again). The local dealer said it could be a clogged fuel filter (but I doubt this as it shuts off suddenly and does not spudder and die). Their other idea for a cause was a faulty cam sensor. I don't know a thing about a cam sensor, does this sould like what might happen if one went bad?
#2 There is a loud exhaust leak type sound when pulling a trailer and going up a hill or when floor it. The owner thought that it might a lifter ticking (I told him I thought it would be doing this noise at low rpm if it was a lifter due to lower oil pressure). Am I correct in ruling out a bad lifter? He also thougt it might be the turbo going out. I have no idea of what a turbo soulds like when it goes out (can anyone explain how to tell?). My idea is a problem with the wastegate. My reasoning for this is it only happens at higher rpms, and it kind of seems to lose power also. It wouldn't be an exhause leak could it? If it were you would hear it at all rpms right?
As far as the truck shutting down sound like the cam sensor is the most likly problem. When they go bad you have the syptoms you describe, like dying suddenly. You should'nt lose all acc. though?. The 94-97 powerstroke did'nt have a wastegate but its a possiblity that your EBPV is malfunctioning and closing. They can be disconnected but I'm not sure exactly how to do it. Someone ought to chime in and tell ya how to do it and then you can eliminate that possiblity.
