I have a 1992 Ford Ranger 4.0L V6. The valve covers are leaking and I have purchased factory gaskits ($60.00/pair OUCH!) but need the torque settings for the valve cover bolts. I was told by a surly Ford mechanic that it is 18 ft. lbs., but that doesn't seem right. I would appreciate someone who knows for sure what the proper setting is.
The 92 Haynes manual says:
Step 1 36-60 in/lb
Step 2 Wait two minutes
Step 3 Retighten 36-60
Make sure you look at the spreader washers and put them back in the same place. A lot of times just tightening the bolts to the proper torque will solve the problem. And start from the middle of the cover and work towards the ends. The mechanic was off a little on the torque. You would have probably had to invest in an easy-out if you put that much torque on those bolts. Good luck.
