I want to lower my 97 4X4 Expidition. It has torsion bars on the front. How low will it go and in an extream lower will it align back up? I plan to lower it at least 3" or more.
The question should be why wouldn't you lower a 4x4? Offroading is the ONLY reason to keep it stock height or even raising it. Go to WMS racing .com or even better I saw another site posted a few days ago that was cheaper. You'll get new torsion keys and shorter springs. Your expy will handle better, brake shorter, ride less bouncy and look better. Getting in and out is easier too. The kits are usually 2" front and 3" rear. If you go lower than 3 inches you will need "shorter" shocks and drivetrain angles could cause problems too
What are you tryng to achieve? Are you looking to lay frame, or reduce a couple of inches for performance and handling? Is your expy an XLT or do you have LLS?
There is nothing wrong with lowering a 4X4. You are just losing ground clearace. In fact, if your rig never leaves the road, it works to your advantage, by lowering your center of gravity, decreasing your chance of a rollover.
It just happens to be a 4X4. I want to lower it because it looks good. No other reason. My wife will never go off road anyway. I am going to change wheels and tires, Lower it about 2 to 3 inches, and maybe some minor mods to the powertrain. I have had this along time and I am ready for something new. The thing that gets me is this tortion bar front end. Not sure if it will go very low.
