where are the timing marks on a 91 f150 6 (300)
my dampner is rusty and I cannot find the marks ..to add to the confusion there are 2 sets of timing points ...if you are standing in front of the truck on the right side is a plate with bumps that says 14 10 8 6 (i think ) and on the other side almost directly across is the old fashion plate with notches and one deep cut which I take to be top dead center ... question one ...which one of these indicators do I use ... question 2 if its the notches which way is advanced long set of notches or short ... question 3 ....I have located a deep notch in the crank dampner and about 90 degrees a way is a very fine mark ..which when painted white sort of lines up with the left hand side ... v notches about 2 noches from tdc on the short side ...
well heck just how do you set the timing on one of these bears anyway ? its been a loooooong time guys ...
I had the same problem, get out some sand paper and go to work. The correct timing mark is deep enough that when you sand and clean the vibration damper it will be plain to see.
That one cost me a couple hours of anxiety and two trips to the smog inspection .
If the timing marks are not lining up, check to make sure the balancer has not gone bad. The outer ring is known to come loose from the rubber and spin. throwing off your timing marks.Pull #1 spark plug out and set piston at top dead center and check your timing marks on balancer.
Thanks guys for all the help would have replied sooner but was out of town... far off the track ...that was exactlly what I needed ..hope to try to time it this afternoon...
well I reset the timing and replaced the distrubitor cap and rotor (completely worn out ) and still the @#$% thing misses under load ... also chased down some vacum lines that I thought might be leaking ...also checked to see that the timing advanced and it did ... got an oxy sensor coming in soon so will replace that ... this thing runs like a top unloaded but misses under load ... on both tanks ..so don't think its the fuel pumps ..(I bought it this way ....got a GREAAAT DEAL ) right .... LOL

Did you un-plug the spout connector when you checked your timing. Are you sure the outer ring of theharmonic balancer has not spun, causing your timing marks to be off.
yes did un=plug and no not sure about that ... will have to check that one... but must tell you the engine idles and runs fine when just crusing so seems the timing is ok and its advancing when the engine is raced up so that seems right ... it just misses under load but if I feather back the gas a bit it will gradually work its way up to speed with out missing ... am trying to come up with a good way to check the fuel pressure on the fly with out costing an arm or leg ... but think that is ok because its unlikely that both pumps would die at the same time ... and it has new filters and so on ...
Make checking your fuel pressure your next step. You have three fuel pumps right, one pressure pump on the frame rail, and two pusher pumps in the fuel tanks. My freinds 86 f150 with a 302 had a real bad miss in the upper RPM's. I checked his fuel pressure, at idle it was ok but soon as he revved it up, his fuel pressure would drop.
He replaced both fuel pumps, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, still the same problem. Finnaly he inspected the "diverter valve" the cannister looking thing that has all the fuel lines that run into it. He took it apart and found alot of sediment and water in it. He installed a new one and it solved his problem.
thanks for this info ...now that makes a lot of sense ... will check that very soon ...
I know the fuel pressure regulator has been replaced
by the way where is that "diverter valve" located ...
thanks
The diverter valve is mounted on the frame rail under the drivers side door, right before the high pressure pump. I know 89 trucks had that set-up I am not to sure about yours.
ok now the coil has been replaced and the fuel pressure doesn't drop below 40psi (seems a bit low to me can it be set higher some how) spark plug wires have been rerouted .. still misses under load ...idles fine runs smooth till you gas it and cuts out badly ... feels like the spark shuts off ...gerrrrrrr
