Question Freeze plugs and cam shaft q's

Does anyone know the correct way to install new freeze plugs or have any tips on doing so? I have a 351c I need to install them. I've heard of using a socket and tapping them in, but is this ok? I am in the middle of rebuilding this motor with my dad and uncle and they are the "brains" behind the project, but neither one of them is around for a while. I just picked up the block and parts from being cleaned and was wondering what a RV cam shaft does. The 351c 2v is going to be in a 63 f-100 that will be a daily driver and was curious what the new shaft will do.This way I won't be out of the loop when we start building.

Thank you.

I use the socket, and hammer method of installing core plugs (freeze plugs) even when I worked as a mechanic because I didnt want to spend the money on the "proper" tools but if you look at what the machine shop uses it doesn't look much different than a socket use one that fits inside the plug loosely, and tap it in straight so that the top edge is just below the beveled part of the hole.
The RV cam is just that a good cam for an RV they provide good low end torque for towing, and decent midrange power but will usuallly run out about 4500rpm, they work good in pickups .

The RV cam designation is kind of generic. Check some of the threads here on camshafts.

Core / freeze plug replacement

I'm interested in topic so thought I'd ask my own question...

I've purchased a used 400 to put in my truck. While attempting to clean off the gasket, which turns out to be something hard, and brittle like liquid gasket, I noticed several freeze plugs have some kind of sealant around them. The plugs are kinda of suspect looking and I'm thinking to replace them.

It's accessible now so if its do-able what do I need to know? Clean/wire brush, punch in screw driver and pry? Is one plug as good as the next or does it matter? Use a sealant??

thanks

yea just punch them in, and use a pry bar to get them out of the block or a claw hammer. I have never used sealant on core plugs with the exception of screw in types which I use plumbers tape. A little sand paper to clean off the rust is all I would use, and either brass or steel I have used both, and haven't ever really seen much difference in the first 10 yrs.
