Running lights and DOT question

What are the purpose of running lights? They came with my truck so I did not really get a choice in the matter but just curious.

Also, I have seen some heavy duty pick up trucks with "DOT [bunch of numbers]" labeled on both sides of the truck. Do we need this to tow trailers or only if we exceed a certain weight limit? I have only seen it on a couple trucks with trailers.

AFAIK, it is the width that is most important.
Anything 80" or more requires lights or flags

Three bar ID light facing rear required on vehicles over 80". Lights to be spaced 6" to 12" apart. Same rule on the front. (cab lights)

The DOT number on the door is A FED ID #. It is required on commercial vehicles. If you truck/trailer is not for hire and non commecially owned, no FED ID # needed.

so technically I guess we do not need the running lights since the F250 is 79.9" unless you count the tow mirrors fully extended?

Yes, the mirrors are included. And 79.9" is darn close to 80" anyway.

My got around that 80" thing by getting a farm tag.
