I have a 2004 6.0L (Build date 11/04) Everytime I turn off my truck after trips that are longer than 10 miles I hear a grinding noise that sounds like it it coming from the bottom of my truck. At first I thought it was the turbo spooling down but I now think that it is coming from somewhere on the under carriage. I took my truck in for its first oil change and the service manager said that he did not hear anything after I turned off the truck. A couple of days when my wife and I got home from running errands she said that she heard it also. Its very wierd, it only happens as soon as I turn off the truck and it only happens for a couple of seconds. Has any body heard or experienced this? If so, let me know. Thansks.
Yes, I have noticed it also. I picked up my F-250 Crew Cab 6.0 last week and noticed the sound right off. It lasts for about 5-10 seconds after shutting the truck off. It seems to be coming from the "middle" of the truck. Sort of a spinning sound that slows and stops. My buddy thinks it is the turbo (heard through the exhaust), but that was based on a phone call and not actually hearing the sound. My initial thought was that it was coming from the gas tank, maybe a fuel pump, but I couldn't see how that pump could spin that long after powere was shut off.

How did you get a build date of 11/04? That has not arrived yet....I have a wirring sound that is coming from the turbo after I shut the truck off. I let it get to an idle for 30 seconds before shutting it off and on mine it is just the turbo.
11/04? Time projection...cool. Wish I could...stock market...2:00 A.M. when the bar closes...Buuuraaaa.
This will sound nuts, but in a couple of other vehicles I have had sound was emitting from the fuel tank (pressure relief) and/or the fuel pump. Check fuel fill cap also.
Hey, weirdererer (or more weird for the gramaticly inclined) things have happened.

Have you figured it out yet?

My vote goes to the AC too.... it does make a strange noise when you turn it off. To find out, you can leave the truck running at idle and kill the ac. I believe it will make the same noise.
The AC does not seem to be the problem (not really a problem, just a sound). It is defintely something rotating because you can hear it slowing down and eventually stopping. My best guess is it is coming from the fuel tank. By the time I can walk around to the passenger side and listen, the sound has stopped. I cannot feel any associated vibration on the tank. Is there anything else in the "middle" of the truck that would be rotating after shutting off the engine and ignition? I can see nothing in the drive line? It does it everytime the engine is shutoff. Sometimes I let it idle for a minute or so prior to shutdown and other times I shut it off right after stopping.
I have an 03 and I listened for what you guys describe. Other than the turbo winding down and the boost escaping and other assorted noises related to a cooling engine, I don't hear what I would describe as grinding. Of course, my wife says I am deaf as a post. I don't seem to hear everything she says.

Not really it is diagnosed in most males as selective hearing, but we cannot tell them.

I used to say that too. The ear doctor told me that women have higher pitched voices and it is possible that I don't hear everything she says. Sort of like on Peanuts where the teacher goes "Waah waah waah".
I read in Maxim a few years ago that many times women use 5 words comparitively to a man using 1 word to say the same thing in a conversation. And because of this men tend to tune out the non-essential words sometime missing the entire dialogue.
