PSD Questions

As a new PSD owner (2001 excursion) I have two questions. My Ford mechanic told me I do not have to fill the fuel bowl when changing the fuel filter due to the electric fuel pump. Is that true? Also what's the thoughts on diesel fuel additives? He told me "not" to use anything. Thanks...

He's right about the fuel filter, I have never had to refill the bowl.
Stay away from fuel additives that contain alcohol, the stuff that says "Removes Water". It surrounds the water and then lets it pass through the injectors. I use an additive that is a cetane enhancer, it starts easier and I get better milage with it. I thought about buying an Excursion, but it's a little on the small side

The dealer was correct the filter can be changed or drained and the filter housing will fill itself, no more manual pumping and bleeding lines and swearing! There is A bleed valve at the rear of the fuel filter housing, there is A bleed tube hanging down the right side of the engine, I extended mine with A piece of fuel line (rubber hose) which allows me now to catch the fuel, this traps water that may be in the fuel, It also acts as A drain for the fuel housing when servicing the fuel filter!

The fuel filter question was already talked about no reason to beat a "dead horse". The fuel supplement however is a good question. The dealer that I bring the truck to recomends using "Power Service Diesel Fuel Supplement". Up until last winter I did not use any additives, that was until my fuel gelled up. I took me 5hours to get the thing running again...that time included waiting for the tow truck to bring me to my neighbor's heated gurage. So, from that day everytime I get fuel in the winter I always use it.

They also have a product called 911, it is used for de-gelling the fuel. I have never used it so I do not know much about it.

Now, if you live were it never freezes then you really don't need a supplement for gelling. But do not forget about it when you go on that yearly ski trip......

Stay away from alcohol!

After getting a batch of bad diesel on a trip back to the mid-west, I picked up the Performance Formula from Stanadyne and use it when filling on the road. When around home I usually fill at the same station and don't worry about the additive.

I can't say that I've seen a big difference when using the additive, but I've also not had a problem with lower quality/cetane fuel (yeah, could be concidence - but it's cheap enough that it's worth the piece of mind if nothing else).

I use the Performance formual, makes a slight difference in mine. Raised it .4 mpg, starts easier and lubes the fuel system. I live here in northen Ind, and getting good quality fuel is a problem. Everyone I know around here runs it and is very happy.
