Leaky linkage seal

I have a 92 Explorer with an automatic transmission. There is a leak where the linkage is attached to the transmission.I am assuming it is just an "o"ring. Is it simply a matter of removing the nut and bolt and replacing the seal or is it more complex?I have been told you might have to remove the pan to get at the seal.
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I had this same problem on an '86 Aerostar. The seal, as I recall, was a rubber circle surrounded with a metal ring similar to main seals for the crank, but way smaller. The seal pressed into the tranny case from the inside. To get to the seal the tranny pan had to be removed. There was a metal pin wedged into the tranny case (through the pan gasket surface just below the shift selector shaft) which was driven up past the selector shaft. This pin fit into a groove in the shaft and prevented the shaft from moving axially. I could never get the damn pin out because I ended up breaking it off at the gasket surface trying to pull it out with side cutters; the only tool I had availabe that could grip the pin. Anyway, removing that pin would have allowed the shaft to slide out of the case and given access to the seal for removal and replacement. It would have been a simple job if that pin could have been removed like it was made to be. Don't know if your situation is the same but I'll bet it's similar. Good luck.
