I just got my exhaust kit from the group purchase and I was wondering how much of a difference the muffler would make. I am definitely tossing the CAT but i was curious how much the straight thru muffler would make with the exhaust tone. I am definitely considering straight piping the exhaust but I don't just want it loud and stupid. I do want everyone else to hear my PSD roar. By the way it's a 95 7.3 PSD. Thank folks.
To me, a straight pipe is just too loud at times. I've got a straight-thru muffler on mine now, and she's plenty throaty when I want her to be, yet sounds civilized when I'm rolling into the neighborhood late at night.
Just my $.02.
That's the kinda info I'm looking for. The kid side of me says straight pipe it, but the adult side says HMMMM maybe the muffler. Hey Quad does the muffler give out a good tone when running at speed or idling or is it only when you jump on it?
I straight piped my stock exhaust and I'll agree, it was almost obnoxious. I loved the the sound of the turbo screaming but I could see the loud exhaust noise getting old after a while. I put a 4" stainless steel turn down tip on it and, from the cab, it seemed to quiet it down a lot. I suppose because it was directing the exhaust towards the ground. Now I think it sounds just perfect, I can hear the whistle of the turbo and the growl of the exhaust, but it's not too loud when I'm driving it around. Can't say for sure what it sounds like from outside, I haven't let anyone else drive it yet so I could hear what it sounds like.
Craw under and see if you have a straight through designed muffler (ford put the on some late 95's into 96. I gutted my kitty and left the muffler. By the way, Banks states that the 96 muffler showed better numbers (flow wise) and Banks does not offer an aftermarket for it.
Look under your truck at your exhaust where your muffler is attached to your pipes. if you can, unbolt th muffler and push it to the side, and start it up and rev her up. This is what I did to determine if I wanted straight pipe or not. it took me 10 min..
As nojeffgordon stated, the stock muffler on a '95 is a straight through muffler that Banks doesn't think needs to be changed. That's what I've got. My system consists of the following: a Hypermax downpipe, the stock 3.5" straight through muffler, a "reducer" that expands the system from 3.5" to 5", then a 48" long section of 5" pipe, then a 5" mandrel bent tailpipe that goes over the rear axle. Once there, there's another "reducer" that expands the system to 6" where it exits in the stock location. Because of the increase in pipe diameter, even at idle the pitch is considerably lower, and when I'm in the throttle at all, the sound is deep and throaty, but restrained. Only when I'm hammering it does it get very loud.
