I looked into doing that with my 97 Expy and was told it shouldn't be done. Can't remember exactly why, but I believe it had to do with the wrong amps or volts or something. Someone else can probably provide a better explanation. But I'm pretty sure you would need to replace the head unit and then hook up your new amp.

I installed an aftermarket amp in my '00. The stock head unit didn't have RCA outs so we had to install converters. No big deal, just added a few bucks to the price.

Probably said that because it had factory premium sound. The factory amp should be taken out of the system when installing an aftermarket amp. Other than that it should be fine.

Yes, it was the Mach system. So if I removed the current amp, I could upgrade?

Yes you can add aftermarket amp to your system. As long as you have taken the factory amp out. The wiring will be different at the speakers but if you are adding a new amp you will probably upgrade the wiring also.
