Question Truck Assembly Manuals

Has anyone seen any assembly manuals for this era? I've seen them for later models.

I'm not sure what you mean by assembly manuals, but I have a shop manual for 39 to 48 cars and trucks.

If you mean an assembly manual like how the parts go together, nope never seen them. The closest I've seen are books like the above mantioned shop manual, which really doesn't help much as far as bodies go, the body parts books, which have a few drawings, but aren't extremely detailed (just part numbers mainly) and the big green Ford parts book, kind of like a master catalog, that one has some pictures. Other than that, best to just documnet how you took things apart, or look at an original truck to see how something goes.

I had done a 52 C***vy a few years ago and I had found an assembly manual and it was really nice to see about what went where and gave you an idea as to how things fit. The trouble with our '40 it's in a few baskets when I got it. So I'll go to a lot of web sites and shows and take lots and lots of Pic's. No big deal digital cameras are wonderful for this kind of stuff. But if anyone has any ideas please feel free to share. I'm totally impressed with the level of knowledge and commitment to help and advise this forum has to offer. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!!!

John, I'm sure if you have any questions about what goes where, or how something is supposed to be, somebody here would be able to give you a hand. Luckily these trucks are pretty simple to put together, but any little snags you run into, post it here. I'm sure you'll get an answer.

I was looking for how thing should look as they are assembled. My 40 is in pieces would help to have exploded views like how the front fenders are tied together at the front and where all the mounts are. It would really help me as I'm putting on a ranger frame. I looked at your Pic's and they are a help, THANKS

JW,
I was the same as you, my '40 came in 250 boxes of parts. The front fenders are tied to the body at the running boards and two bolts in front of the doors, and then both fenders are tied to the grille at the front. The inner fenders aprons MUST be in to tie the fenders down to the frame at the radiator area. The inner fenders add rigidity to the whole front end.

That is where I am with mine right now, tying the rad and hood down. I just went through the front fenders, if you want I can send you a few pictures from mine where I tied it to and the frame to fender brackets I made up for it. Let me know? AL

Pictures are in my gallery.

John, click on my gallery and you will find some of those pictures of the front fender brackets with measurements. These are brand new inner fenders pants that I have, and I had to do some chopping to get around the Mustang ll A-arms. There is a bolt that goes through at the rear of the inner fender close to the cowl with a corresponding bolt hole in the frame.

The front bracket is mounted on the top side of the frame and turns a 90 and goes up to capture the mounting hole in the inner fender 9 1/4 " to the center of the hole. I asked on the forum if any one could give me a measurement of their stock bracket, but no one responded. This works for me and the balance of sheet metal on the front end came toether quite well. Check out the other pictures.

Its hard to get a camera down in there for a good view, but if need be I'll pull the rad out and take a few shots with a tape measure so you can get an idea for measurements. My advice to you would be to mount the fenders and inner pants on to the cowl and support the front portion with a jack stand, well fitting the grille together to hold the both fenders together as a clip unit. Then you can put a jack under the belly of the grille so you can raise and lower the front sheet metal to fit your new Ranger frame. It would be nice to have the running boards on but you can't do that until you satisfy your front clip height. Once done, put your boards up to the frame and mark your hole and hang 'em on and bolt 'em up.

I know it looks tough but hang in there, it will work out. Shout if you need more. AL
